Asbestos siding

Asbestos is a natural material that is mined and then formed into many industrial and residential items. It has been used extensively in the US since the early 1900’s and took off in popularity because it was both heat and chemical resistant and is a great insulator. It’s only in the last 40 or so years that the dangers of using asbestos have come to light – by nature its a very fibrous material and those fibers have been shown to lead to mesothelioma and cancer.

Homes built in the 60’s & 70’s can have asbestos as an insulator on piping and boilers and often in one other area that falls into our world – siding.

Removal of asbestos siding

That’s what we found on a home in Randolph recently – the siding was asbestos and although there’s no specific government requirement to remove it, the client was keen to get it removed. The removal of asbestos is very carefully controlled by the State of New Jersey – specifically the use of a state approved dumpster for removal and disposal of the material, and for the crew to be in proper PPE for their health and safety. The siding is removed with minimal breakage and the crew ensure that area is protected in case of material falling.

New siding

Once removed, the house was wrapped in CertainTeed CertaWrap Moisture Barrier. The crew then installed CertainTeed 8″ Vertical Board and Batten siding in white on the entire house.

New roof and gutters

In this instance the existing one layer roof was removed. It was replaced with a tried and true classic, GAF Timberline HDZ Shingle in Charcoal.

The existing gutters and downspouts were removed, and were replaced with a new black gutter system that really pops against the new white exterior of the home. The white board and batten siding with the black gutters and wood door give this a very popular modern farmhouse look.
