The effects of 27 years of sun, rain, snow, and wind began to really show the toll that the original roof and wood siding was taking on this lovely home in Long Valley, NJ. The homeowners knew it was time to replace the weathered exterior, and decided to seize the opportunity to take it from a drab and dated brown to a more modern look.

We started from the top down on this home, so first up was replacing the original roof. The homeowners had several sections where shingles blew off in various storms, as well as leaking which was occurring from ice damming. Between the issues and the age, the need for replacement was quite obvious. The original brown roof was completely removed, and replaced with the ever-classic GAF Timberline HDZ shingle in Charcoal. The Timberline product is known to be a leader in the industry with their Lifetime Algae Resistant shingle. They opted for the 50-year “Silver Pledge” Weather Stopper warranty from GAF, only available through a GAF Master Elite contractor. This provides them with a 10-year workmanship and 50-year material defect warranty (from GAF), upgraded GAF Tiger Paw synthetic underlayment, and peace of mind for the lifespan of their roof. 6″ seamless white gutters were custom made on-site and attached with hidden hangers.

Next up on the renovation were the doors. First, the existing drafty slider in the back was replaced with an Andersen PermaShield series sliding glass door, giving the homeowners a maintenance free exterior and interior with a 20 year glass warranty. Knowing this renovation would span the life of their time in this home, the homeowners wanted to give the front entry the first impression “wow” they felt it deserved. They chose a Therma-Tru Classic Craft door with full privacy glass, with two sidelites; the privacy glass allows abundant natural light into the home, while really showing off the stunning St. Augustine wrought iron scroll work.

While wood siding is a classic and often lovely choice, the reality is that it also comes with the promise of constant maintenance and the inevitable failure over time due to the elements of nature. For this reason, our homeowners decided this was the opportunity to go maintenance-free on their siding with James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding. They still have that classic look of real wood, but now have a product that will be moisture resistant, pest resistant, and fire resistant. The Deep Ocean color they chose is bold and modern yet classic at the same time. It is complemented beautifully by the white Azek trim installed around the entirety of the house, including the new headers on the windows, and the simple Mid-America raised panel black shutters really anchor everything together from the roof to the siding to the door.

It was a pleasure working with these homeowners to pick out the products that would best suit their needs and the aesthetic of their home. That dated exterior of their home is now an absolute stunner in the neighrborhood, and the classic look is one we trust they will love for years and years to come!
